Kitakata Green is a delicate pale green Japanese washi made from 90% Gampi fibre and 10% Alpha Cellulose. It has a soft, subtly glossy surface and four deckle edges. As part of the Awagami Editioning Papers range, it is acid-free, archival, and made to a high standard for lasting quality.
Gampi’s long, silky fibres create a thin, smooth, translucent paper with remarkable strength. Suitable for a wide range of techniques, including ink, drawing, and printmaking, Kitakata Green reflects the distinctive warmth, resilience, and durability of traditional Japanese washi.
Traditional Japanese woodblock printing, or mokuhanga, has long used paper made from the inner bark of the paper mulberry tree, known as kozo. Its long fibres create paper that is exceptionally strong and absorbent, even when made thin. Gampi, meanwhile, has long, silky fibres that produce a thin, smooth, translucent, tissue-like paper.
By combining long kozo fibres with neri, papermakers can create paper that is thin and translucent while retaining remarkable strength. These qualities give Japanese washi its distinctive character and set it apart from Western yoshi papers.
