Schmincke Aqua Fixative is a professional final fixative developed specifically for protecting finished watercolour and gouache paintings. This alcohol-based spray forms a colourless, age-resistant protective layer that helps guard artwork against fingerprints, humidity, and dust without altering colours when applied in light, even coats. Its fast-drying formulation provides a matt to semi-gloss finish depending on the absorbency of the paper and the thickness of application.
Designed for use on completely dry artwork, the fixative should be applied in several light coats from a distance of 30 to 40cm. As with all watercolour fixatives, the absorbency of the paper and painting technique can influence the final appearance. Watercolour paper may become slightly more transparent after application, while works created with low-binding media such as watercolours and gouache may appear darker if excessive amounts are applied. The fixative is intended to protect finished artwork but does not provide significant UV protection, so the use of lightfast colours and suitable framing is recommended for long-term preservation.
